A Christmas Sonnet

As twinkling baubles light up Christmas trees
and festive gifts for loved ones lay beneath,
a kiss ‘neath mistletoe is sure to please
whilst on the door a pretty holly wreath.

Yew logs are burning on an open fire
as children gather round their faces glow,
and outside carols sung sweet by a choir
so lovely in the hush of falling snow.

Placed on the mantelshelf a holy scene,
bright candles in the window welcome all.
A Christmas cake is iced red, white and green
as greeting card displays hang on the wall.

This evening is the time of Holy Night,
and wise men’s guiding star is shining bright.

Time has changed
Lovely poem Stella but unfortunately this portrays Christmas as it used to be. Nowadays is a totally different occasion or so it seems to my age group. Carol singing on the doorstep and a sock with the minimum of little treats discovered in the early hours of Christmas morning made Christmas then a visit to the church to praise the Lord. Times change. thanks for posting this one and have a Happy Christmas yourself. SL Rod.

I almost as old as you Rod, the poem reflects my Christmas except  that i don't have an open fire.I do however have lots of grandchildren who's faces positively glow at Christmas, in fact the younger three ( 7, 5, 2) all put the baubles on my tree for me this year, cards are on the wall, Christmas cake is made, snow is promised, candles lit and no doubt carollers will be coming very soon, the Salvation Army band will be playing in the city and Christmas is in my heart already

This seems like it would be on a Christmas card so beautiful . I can almost see the children at the fireplace.

Thank you so much, Christmas is a time for giving and the children make it so special..

A beautiful sonnet
This poem is lovely for it's rhyme, musical quality and more importantly its theme. The first two stanzas describe a family setting. It describes Christmas as a family occasion going so far as to describe the environmental features of the season's celebration. The last two stanzas focus on the more spiritual aspects of the season such as the nativity, since I can imagine that's the most likely 'Holy Scene'. The last stanza also speaks of the King's Star and the magi. All in all, it was quite an enjoyable poem.

Thank you, Christmas does inspire lovely thoughts...
