A Poem To The Fallen

This is a poem to the fallen,
both here and overseas.
A sad lament for those who died
while falling to their knees.

Dead from acts of terrorism
and in countries lost to war.
It's a wonder this world accepts it,
I know I can't anymore!

Crazed killers stalk our streets at home
while insane leaders rule at will.
Thousands of years we have endured
and yet it goes on still.

Is there to be no ending to actions
we know are just not right?
The truth being we are so ignorant
that all we can do is fight.

As religions say we should be brothers
and most of us believe in God.
Why is it that the killing goes on
with so many under sod?

I say this must be finished
as we've taken it far too long!
There's no reason to put up with something
that we know is just plain wrong.

Author Notes

It's been awhile since I put an anti-war poem in here. But it's not like I've ever forgotten all the poor men and women of the USA and other countries so far from their homes and loved ones. It's even more sad at this time of year when we consider the importance of family and friends at bit more than usual. As far as I'm concerned no young man or young woman should be forced, coerced, cajoled, persuaded, humiliated or bribed into fighting for their country. I feel it should be an act of completely altruistic patriotism in response to a takeover of that country by tyrannical forces from within or without, an attack upon that country by another or an extremely severe threat to the people of that country. And that should be determined by the persons putting themselves in harm's way. Wow, that was long-winded but it feel quite honest and accurate to my thinking on the subject. I suppose the ultimate choice is in the mind, heart and soul of the citizen. Yet I hate to see "children" sacrificed due to the often twisted will of people in control. Oh Lord friends, Happy Holidays and spend quality time with friends and family you love! Please do that and enjoy! We all need a break from the insanity!

I do enjoy a good anti-war poem! And I donít think I could agree with you more! We all know war is dangerous and damaging to our lives and to others yet it is also one of the first things we scream and shout when something bad happens to us (as a species). As if we all donít have enough to fight against within our own borders, in our own communities. Thank you for sharing this and for sparking a conversation!

Very brave poem!
This is a very brave poem full of powerful themes. It notes something that is very sad, that all of this has been going on for a long time, yet we never learn. Perhaps it is because it is a reality we have come to accept and in accepting it, we may have unconsciously resigned ourselves to it. All in all, this is a good poem, a tribute to those who have fallen because of injustice and the broken way of the world. Thanks for sharing.

I was fortunate enough to have enlisted in a reserve unit when Vietnam was still a small war being conducted by professionals. Later, the thing exploded and the draft grabbed people by the thousands. My unit was never called up, but had it been, I would have gone, like it or not. That's why I'm glad we have a volunteer military now.
