Seth

Character History and Development

The earliest imagination of the character Seth was about 3 years ago as just Seth, without a last name. The basis of the character and his name was inspired by the character Joseph "Seph" McCauley from Cinda Williams Chima's The Heir Trilogy. This book series I have come to take vast amounts of inspiration from. Seth at this time was merely a character with no plot, background, or placement in any writing, he was simply an idea. Over time and much speculation and the growth of this idea urged me to merge him with my first ever attempt at a novel. This novel had no working title, but not too far into it's creation, I had a rush of ideas on what could be done with this character whom by this time now had been given the last name Griffin. I had thoughts of creating a whole series of books based off this character, The Seth Griffin Chronicles; however shortly into writing the first book, I realized I had aimed too high over my head and abilities and trashed the idea, but had realized that by this time the character itself had evolved from being based of the hotheaded character Seph McCauley to the equally hotheaded fictional embodiment of myself. I continued to work on the original novel which at one point was to be set as the sixth book in my proposed series. This work could be seen through some eyes as a fan fiction for the Halo video-game universe. I realized that if I ever completed this book it could not be published due to its heavy integration of the Halo Universe in its story line. I changed names, places, dates, even complete excerpts to take away this Halo integration, although it was still very apparent that it was a major influence on its creation. This work's prelude and part of its first chapter can be found in my portfolio under Seth Griffin Book-Trashed. I trashed the series due to lack of time and attention put into its creation. However, I kept my crown jewel, Seth Griffin. I started a second book featuring Seth in it as a more minor role, but introduced several other promising characters I intend to reuse. This book dubbed Skyriders seemed extremely promising, I actually completed several chapters before my time started to be constrained due to school and was unable to hold the clear and full plot in my head due to an overload of ideas. I never digitized Skyriders due to lack of time, but not all hope is lost for its creation, I constantly go back to it with new ideas. I can say this about it, if ever made into a full novel and eventual series, any reader would become emotionally invested in it; I delved deeper into character psychology and relationships in this novel. Anyway, back to Seth. By time I had given up on this novel, Seth was my depiction of my dream self. Seth and writing then took a backseat to my life at the start of summer 2011 until about springtime 2012. Seth spark new life in my mind again and I let a story line of him play out in my mind for some time. Now I am taking this character for another spin on a new book and with him having a new last name, Phoenix (I have a thing for mythological creatures). As with my past works, I will rely heavily on The Heir Series and the Halo Universe for inspiration and lean heavily on military, technology, and science fiction themes. This new Seth story is to be called A Phoenix Rises in accordance with his new last name.

Character Traits

Name: Seth Phoenix (changed from Griffin)

Nicknames: Sparks/Sparky - Seth's first and main nickname is due to his affinity for engineering and electronics, a recurring trait throughout all of his appearances.

Swift - A later and less common nickname, which was never actually used in its intended text. This was to be accredited to his affinity for vehicle usage, especially aircraft.

Ironmonger/Warmonger/Death Tech - Although not always, some of Seth's creations are used for militaristic purposes and, in some cases, include killing; these names are associated with those who create weapons. These names are mentioned in Skyriders, but were not used again. Death Tech might come up in the new novel.

Age, Height, Weight: Usually, he is around 17-26 years old, around 5'8" to 6'2", and about 130-165 pounds.

Characteristics: A born leader, works well in a group, but excels alone, affinity for technology, stubborn/rash/arrogant/naive, protective, unpredictable, accepting, not open about personal life/family, not easily frightened or angered, stealthy, sly, quick thinker, opportunistic, socialite, free spirited, informed, quick learner

Brief History

Since Seth has been used several time, he has different backgrounds, but generally they all have several similar ideas. He comes from a family of wealth, but part of his family, usually parents, were killed due to war and it has created a complicated living situation at home and he has learned to rely on himself and inherited a large some of money from his ancestors and/or his parents. He excels in school and stands out from every other student and is extremely involved. His opinions are widely accepted by those who know him and he is a born leader. He often at some point gets involved with or joins the military and/or is involved in criminal activities on a small scale (i.e. works for himself, not for a crime syndicate). He is well known for his technical capabilities and often creates new inventions to suit his wants and needs. He very rarely gets too invested in close relationships, but is very social and "hooks up" quite a bit due to his popularity, although these kinds of things do not negatively impact his popularity. He usually has at least one really close friend whom he does almost everything with, but does not share a lot about his home life with because he himself hasn't come to terms with the past troubles in his family's history. He wears a set of electronic military dog tags around his neck 24/7 that belonged to an unbeknown to the public owner. He spends very little time at home, sleeps very little, and is almost always either working, partying, learning, or sleeping (the one thing he goes home to do besides invent stuff).

Previously Affiliated Characters (Reusable)

Alistair Drake - Introduced as the main character of Skyriders, and as Seth Griffin's lifelong best friend. Alistair, usually called Drake, is almost exactly like Seth in every way due to the fact that they grew up with each other. Alistair is less intelligent then Seth and tends to be less responsible and even more naive than Seth, and he tends to do more stupid stuff. He is a ladies man, but rarely stays to long in a relationship. Alistair, like Seth lost a family member in service to the military and so wears the deceased person's dog tags constantly. Usually the same age as Seth. Inspired by Alistair and Anders from Dragon Age: Origins the video game.

Rourke West - Rourke is a close friend of Alistair's and is the life of the party. He is a short guy with burning red long hair and usually a beard or mustache to match. He is outspoken, outrageous, and loves to party. He cracks jokes constantly and insults people quite a bit. He lacks an intellectual mind and often makes stupid and uninformed comments. Rourke's relationships with his close friends usually have obvious rivalries and usually include a lot of trading of insults. Usually a year younger than Seth and Alistair. Inspired by Oghren from Dragon Age: Origins the video game.

Tiffany Kojin - Alistair's love interest in Skriders, and Seth's ex-girlfriend because she cheated on him. Tiffany is all about professionalism when it comes to important tasks like a job, going to school, and completing an assignment, but once she has finished what she needs to, she is a wild party goer. She hooks up with a lot of people due to her partying. She tries to keep her relationships, but can't resist a good time when she finds one. She is a very open and social person and easy to get along with. She likes to tease people quite a bit verbally, sarcastically, and sexually. Usually the same age or a year younger then Seth and Alistair.

Seraph Kojin - Usually either Tiffany's brother or father, depending on the needs of the story line. In A Phoenix Rises, Seraph will most likely be Tiffany's father, unlike in Skyriders where he was her brother. This was a bit weird because in that story line he was around 40 years old and she was about 20. Seraph has a history with the military and, unbeknownst to them, was close to the deceased family members of Alistair and Seth while in the miltary. Seraph is very reserved, organized, and keeps to himself. He easily gets annoyed by Alistair and Rourke's stupidity, but is more lenient with Alistair because of his connection with Alistair's dead family member(s). Seraph is a leader first and foremost and excels in his profession.

Raven Thomas - Raven has an unwavering crush on Alistair that she is very vocal about. She is usually a year older than Seth and Alistair. She has a vast medical knowledge and has also started to learn technical skills from Seth. Her character had very little development, but she is very short tempered and easily becomes jealous.

Vladimir Drake - Originally written as being the Czar of Russia, that's correct, I said Czar, Vladimir was to be the antagonist of Skyriders and had several possibilities including having a military background with Seraph and possibly being Alistair's father due to the same last name. Both these ideas were scrapped and their last names were played off as being a mere coincidence. Vladimir is a jerk to say the least. He boasts wealth and power and gets whatever he wants. His character is very unlikely to appear in A Phoenix Rises, but his name may be reused because it's just bad-ass.

Niles Slate - Niles was set to be Seth's closest friend in what would have been the first book in The Seth Griffin Chronicles (TSGC). Niles is British, a scrawny guy, not very muscular, but intelligent. He is a skilled marksman and often goes hunting. He is easily frightened and just as easily manipulated. He is a follower to say the least. He is reserved and tends to keep to himself and is not very popular because of it. He is usually around the same age as Seth if not older. Slate's parents abandoned him when he was a young child, but it doesn't really affect his psychology; he is open about it and has come to terms with it. He was raised by foster parents whom he cares very much for.

Robert Sherman - Robert Sherman was set to be in the sixth book of TSGC which is where the original series idea spawned from. Sherman was to be an African American with an open heart. An exceptional soldier and a huge man at about 6 and a half to 7 feet tall, he still had a huge soft spot and acts as a father figure to basically everyone who knows him. Robert is easily annoyed by Sam Bower (bottom of list) and often calls her out on her remarks.

Amanda Tran - Amanda Tran was set to be Seth's commanding officer and love interest in TSGC. Amanda is shorter than Seth, but the same age. She is obviously a born leader and utilizes it well in any and every situation. Amanda likes things to be done military, and does not condone rash, illegal, and/or stupid behavior. This is why she was set to be Seth's love interest, because they are opposites in most cases.

Devin Tran - Amanda's fraternal twin brother Devin is almost just like her. Devin like things to be military, but is more lenient when someone does something out of line. Devin doesn't care at all about Seth and Seth knows it, but Devin tends to keep it to himself. Devin, or Dev for short, is only a tad taller than Amanda, but boasts a toned and muscular body. And however much Dev likes things to work like military, he despises the military, but supports his sister's support for and involvement in it.

Sam Bower - Sam unfortunately was never more then mentioned in TSGC before it was trashed. Sam is the character that everyone loves to hate. She constantly makes sly and rude remarks and can easily piss off everyone in a room with only a few words. She is annoying yet lovable from a readers point of view because she is the comic relief. Sam harbors feelings for Devin Tran, but treats him like crap to hide it, but everyone can tell. Sam is loud, obnoxious, and if she had a male equivalent it would have to be Rourke West.

This seems pretty interesting, I'll have to check out some of the writings mentioned in your paper here. I love making up characters and their story lines as well, they way they thread through a narrative. I think the hallmark of a good writer, what causes someone to be emotionally enthralled in a book, are the relationships developed with the characters. Thanks for sharing.

Best regards,
Michael Thomas Black
