Life in Samac

I often think about the kids we were when we were ten -
what I would give to live those summers all over again.
Making paper planes and pretending we could fly them then
we'd hide away for hours in our tree fort,
the one out by the barn with the leaning-log supports.

Every summer I remember who we used to be.
Inseparable, the best of friends two kids could've been.
We would canoe up the stream until we couldn't see,
late into the night even though we knew that we shouldn't be.

Often times I still imagine you're the boy you were
when apple picking and swimming were our only concerns.
You'll always be the boy who loved to chase the sunrise,
out building castles in the clay until the tides rise.

Catching bees just to prove to me that you were tough,
sometimes I wonder if you knew that you were my first love.
Climbing trees, scraping knees on the way down,
I swear we spent more time in the clouds
than with our feet on the ground.

Extremely moving and well-written. It reminded me of a friend I lost a few years ago--one that I wrote about in my poem "To Jimmy." Adult friends are usually not quite the same or missed as much as those we had when children.

And another wonderful,..
caring and nostalgic poem. I love the line, "You'll always be the boy who loved to chase the sunrise!" Such a warm, sweet and loving piece. And a poem that should be a SL!

Namaste,
Mike
