The Old Wolf

The old wolf stood with head held high
on an evening late in June.
He raised his muzzle to the sky
as he howled at a bright full Moon.

The reason for his yowling
didn't really register in his brain.
Yet his soul's core felt like prowling
as he sang a sad refrain.

And with instinct in each full note
he lamented days of old.
Times when he'd had a fuller coat
and didn't so much feel the cold.

For there weren't many now of his kind
and he was one of few.
It might have been an old song
but to him it still felt new.

Speaking of Indians and bison
and when there'd been more green.
More forests then to run through
and more deer upon the scene.

Now there was much gray in his hair
but he'd howl up til he died.
And if you too had seen him there,
like me you would have cried!

Author Notes

Wolves have traditionally gotten a "bad rap" due to their attacking farm animals and their potential danger to people. Yet they have to eat as we all do and they rarely attack humans. On the other hand wolves are skilled hunters at home in the forest. They are also very family and pack oriented. And they were/are revered by the American Indians and thought to be spirit guides. Personally I find that though they possess an element of danger because they are predatory, they are also beautiful and perhaps even mystical animals. Obviously I am enamored with the American Indian culture and hence also fond of wolves!

I really enjoyed this poem - Wolves are indeed a quite fascinating animal in many ways. A nice smooth, rhythmic poem with an interesting set of Author Notes as well. All told, a very enjoyable piece. One for the S/L.
