Marking Time

It is actually a military term,
A command which means
March in place.

Thus when soldiers are marking
Time, they are moving, but not
Really going anywhere.

Soldiers, though are not the
Only ones who mark time;

Many there are, who at a certain
Point in the years decide the dream
Is over,

There is no pot of gold, and all
That remains is to wait for the
Evening and sleep.

I have seen them but I will not
Join them,

I have known them but I will not
Sing their song.

For because a dream has died,
The spirit need not follow,

And I will say thank you to the
First light of the morning

For as long as the breath is in
My nostrils and the blood runs
To my feet.

I say 'Soldier' on!
Forward march till you reach the top of the hill! There are times when one feels that one has reached the top but finds that there is beauty in the way beyond that. On the news a 'Centenarian' took it on himself to do 'Skydiving'! There is bound to be times when one feels 'over the hill' but call on that inner strength to stand tall and proud that we live and breathe while others remain down in the dumps.

Bravo and amen. I see many contemporary octogenarians who are listlessly awaiting the end. I prefer and enjoy remaining active (writing, painting, traveling, playing online competitive scrabble, watching movies both new and old, taking long walks, attending sporting and musical events at our local high school, and enjoying dinners with friends.) Live!

Thanks, Richard, and good for you.  I have known many people, especially those who identified with their work, who fell apart after retiring.

I guess what we need to try to think about doing now, John, is to make our mark on the time we have left. I like your optimistic determination.

Thanks, Jim.  You have captured the essence of the poem.  I have seen too many people just give up and wait for the reaper.
