Good for Gum

When I feel nervous, tired, or glum,
I give myself a gift.
My fav'rite is a piece of gum,
An inexpensive lift.

It comes in sticks and bricks and balls.
I scrape it off my shoe.
It's exercise for teeth and jaws
And substitutes for glue.

I stick it under tabletops.
(A most improper place.)
I puff and puff until it pops
And decorates my face.

Don't chomp the way some people do,
Like hippopotami.
I close my mouth and gently chew,
Considerate am I.

I recently endured a drought
Of gumless misery.
For two whole years I did without
While braces tortured me.

Now they're removed and I've renewed
My love affair with gum.
It always helps improve my mood,
That tasty, loyal chum.

My dentist says it's bad for me
Like coffee in my cup.
This prize, though, of the chicle tree
I never will give up.

It's been years
The last time I chewed gum must have been twenty years ago Richard and to be honest I used to really enjoy it. I can also remember leaving it in most unhealthy places as you have included in this memory jerking poem. I can also remember the pavements completely dotted by spit out gum and also stuck under the edge of tables! Please tell me you were not in the UK when you were a gum-chewer! Please keep these type of poems coming Richard as they do make bring me nostalgia and that can't be bad. SL for this one old mate, Rod.

It is one of my lifelong regrets that I have never been to the UK.  That does, though, clear me of the  charge of littering your country with discarded gum.  Blame it on the Tories or Liberals, whichever one you aren't.

A light poem that brings a smile. Still, I can't quite get the picture of an octogenarian with popped gum all over his face.

Thank you, John.  Although I still chew gum, It is not bubble gum.   I wrote the poem as if it were being said by a youngster (hence the braces).   I think I've made that clearer now by adding the Author Note.

We're two peas in a pod, Richard...or should I say two pieces in a blister pack. I'm a gum chewer myself, though I don't "revere" it, as you seem to do. I must say, also, that Stanza 4 really gave me a chuckle. Somehow the image of contented cows and cud popped into my head. Another thoroughly delightful piece.

Thank you, Jim.   Although I do chew it (sugarless gum) regularly, I don't quite revere it.   Since I wrote this to be read mainly by children, some exaggeration seemed to be suitable.

Also an excellent...
and much safer substitute for smoking. Many people chew gum and there is sugarless gum so as not to rot your teeth. A fine tribute to a sweet pleasure!

So brilliantly put together. An effortless flow and rhythm with the added bonus of humour thrown in. The fourth stanza was my favourite I think - but the whole piece is delightful, A truly enjoyable and clever poem. Much thanks for an enjoyable read.

And many thanks for your very kind review.
