Defeat Was Not His Will

The old wolf stood his ground and waited
for he had known this day would come.
A much younger male was challenging him
as was their way where he came from.

Perhaps he'd aged but he'd fought many times
so this was just another one.
Yet it might finally be his last
and to battle was not fun.

For he was fit but he was tired
of the conflict and the kill.
Yet to give up was not in him
because defeat was not his will.

He was scarred but he was cagey
and he was bent but he was wise.
So he accepted this to win or to die
as he looked into his opponent's eyes.

Then his foe took one look at him
and turned around and ran away.
Quite surprised but still undefeated
he'd live til he died some other day.

Author Notes

Much as the American Indians did, I've had a liking of wolves for a long time. Wolves are an animal given a "bad rap" by Mankind simply because they are predatory and raided the ranches of sheep farmers and cattlemen. Apparently those sitting in judgment must have forgotten how predatory we are! Also missed that wolves are extremely family and pack devoted and loyal to both. Plus they are wildly beautiful animals!

wild animals
and usually foxes in my country, kill to survive that is how it is meant to be in the great order of things. Farmers breed animals for profit , wolves and foxes kill not for profit but to exist...

A good story.
Thank you Michael. You've done it again - seeming simplicity underpinned by real depth of insight. Your wolves seem to have a lot of similarities to our dingoes. While I've seen some pretty deprived dingoes around settlements, I've seen some truly magnificent specimens in the wild.

An interesting poem
This was an interesting poem. Had a rather humorous conclusion but a very serious theme.I enjoyed the attitude of the old wolf who took the challenge of the younger wolf as 'just another fight'. The poem also revealed the scars the old wolf had obtained in previous battles. Those scars further emphasize his experience and wisdom. And like the poem said, some fights are won by maintaining a stand. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed this poem.
