Mom And Pop

A neon sign was blinking
as bright lightning filled the sky
the night rolled in like clockwork
and you had " the hungry eye ”

We rolled up to the tiny building
as the gravel crunched a tune
hopefully “Pop” would cook up some food
and Mom would serve my coffee soon

Mom came out to take our order
as we sat in the vinyl booth
“ What can I get you kids? ”said Mom
with a smile
and a solitary tooth

I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich
with some chips and a pile of fries
you ordered the exact same thing
with a chocolate malt
as you rubbed my weary thighs

We watched Mom wander
into the kitchen
and put on a silly paper hat
Pop sat at the table
with a magazine
but his head was fuzzy
like a shopworn cat

The food was really delicious
and the coffee
“was chocked full of nuts”
this had to be the strangest
leg of our journey
no “iffins” “ands” or “buts”
